Add GMail search to Internet Explorer 7 without using Google Toolbar

Do you love GMail?
Do you hate toolbars?
Do you want to search GMail from the new IE7 search bar?

If you answered "Yes" to any two of the above then here's your solution:

Step 1:

Open Internet Explorer 7 and goto to the search box on the top right. Click the small down arrow right beside the magifying glass.

Step 2:

Click the "Find more providers" option.

Step 3:

This takes you to this page:

Step 4:

Now go to this box on the bottom right of the page:

In the "Paste the URL..." box paste this URL:

https://mail.google.com/mail/?search=query&view=tl&start=0
&init=1&fs=1&q=TEST&source=navclient

All of that should be in one line.

In the "Specify name..." box type GMail.

Click the Install button and voila..you are done

Again click the down arrow in the search box and you will see GMail listed as a search provider. Search you favourite mailbox right from the comfort of you browser search bar and without any toolbar.

Note: This works only for Internet Explorer 7. I am a Firefox fan myself but IE7 is not too bad. Get it here.

If you ever wanted to bookmark the 'Compose Mail' link in Gmail but failed then heres how you do it:
Compose in Gmail
Right-click on the link and set it as a Favourite (in IE) or Bookmark (in Firefox).

Here's another tip:
Open Gmail so that it shows only unread mails - here's the link:

Of course for both of these tricks to work you need to have cookies enabled on your browser and previously logged in to Gmail (just don't log out once you are done working in Gmail - mind you that you MUST log out if you are using a shared computer)

Those who want to tinker a bit by saving custom Gmail searches as favourites / bookmarks can use this special URL:

https://mail.google.com/mail/?search=query&view=tl&start=0&init=1&fs=1&q=%S

Just replace %S in the URL to what you are searching for say 'is:unread' or 'from:John' - you get the idea;-)

The site allows you to create light weight AJAX chat rooms on the fly by just typing in a room name and a nickname. This is a great service for anyone that wants to communicate with someone who doesn't have the same messaging client as themselves.

Mindblowing stuff. I wonder why nobody thought of this before. Where would you use this:

Scenario 1:
Workplace/School/University does not allow you to chat using messenger (Yahoo or MSN or AOL or even GTalk)

Scenario 2:
You are on Yahoo Messenger while your friend is on MSN.

What you do:

1. Goto Chatcreator
2. Enter the name of the chat room you want to create.
3. You get the URL of your own chat room that you just created and send it to everyone.

And before I forget to mention it, it is free.

Have you ever run into a "Missing HAL.DLL," "Invalid Boot.Ini," or "Windows could not start..." message?
That was when I learned about XP's built-in "Rebuild" command. It often can easily fix "missing HAL," "Invalid Boot.Ini," "Windows could not start..." and similar problems in just a minute or two.

I have not tried it yet but I will the next time Windows XP gives up on me. Take a look.

Very useful site. If you want to visit a site but unable to do so due to restrictions then you need something called an anonymizing proxy (AP for short). In plain english this means that you visit the website of the AP and enter the address of the site you are trying to visit. That's it. Unless the AP site itself is blocked, you can do this. This link contains a huge list of APs, some of which are free. It also tells you how to use google like this to locate your own APs. And if all techniques fail, how to make your own AP.

This was inevitable. The floodgates have really opened now. Microsoft is not complaining and neither is Apple. However the real gainer is Intel. Now they have the entire Mac market as well. Apple's Boot Camp already allows official boot ing of Windows XP on the new Intel based Macs. However Windows XP MCE will have to compete against Apple's Frontrow.

Interesting rumor from Engadget says that the next version of OSX may have native support for Windows XP applications, without emulation. It appears Dvorak may have been right, in a sense.

Another great reason to buy a Mac...that will run everything. And a Mac running on Intel is already running Windows XP. It's time they eliminated the need for reboots.

This is nice...check out all the services not just Digg. One service I really like but that is not mentioned here is Pandora which is a community music recommendation service. What this means is that you select an artist you like and the site streams songs from that artist and others related. Quite nice. And it is all free.

According to this article the next version of OS X will include technology that will allow Mac's to run more than one operating system at the SAME TIME! No more dual booting - when you need to open that Windows app just instantaneously switch over to Windows. When you are done, go back to OS X.

How nice...should beat rebooting...and no more pain in installing Windows on your Mac. Though that can be done it is not exactly for the fainthearted.

Finally, someone has hacked the venerable PuTTY ssh client to store its settings in the filesystem rather than the registry. That means, settings are easily copied to other machines and especially your USB flash drive.

Now this is something I was looking for a looooong time. Very useful. Now I can just copy the folder and it will run anywhere with the right settings.

I downloaded the patch and followed the instructions. It's quite easy to install. I've posted the photos of major installation sequence and some problems I encountered.

Great it works. Initial hiccups will end in a few days. After this prepare to see quite a few dual boot Macs all over the place. Should Apple worry? Leave a comment.

You can have as many Flickr containers as you wish, each having a different tag. The Flickr containers are updated automatically like ordinary RSS containers.

Firefox has set the standard for safe and secure access to the internet. At the moment only Firefox or compatible browsers are supported by Fold.

This is cool. Just what I was looking for. Add content from practically anywhere and of almost all types.
